The answer can be found in "The Chemist's Ready Reference Handbook" (at the desk or regular reference shelf, QD 65 S537 1990) and "Lange's Handbook of Chemistry" (Ready Reference shelf, QD 65 L36 1999). Look up buffers. The question related to a pre-lab asignment.
